Tracing the roots of Gateway Homeless Services

Gateway Homeless Services, formerly known as Christian Service Center, was established in 1975 for the purpose of providing social, educational and recreational services to benefit impoverished youth living in the public housing projects of north Saint Louis.

Throughout the late 1970's and early to mid-1980's, the agency specialized in youth programming that included urban 4-H, softball and basketball teams, year-round field trips and camping, on-site library, after-school tutoring, art therapy, and a host of other child-oriented activities.

In 1989, at the request of the City of St. Louis Department of Human Services, and in response to the growing crisis of homelessness, the agency opened a 24-hour shelter to benefit homeless single women and families.

Today, the agency sponsors the largest and most comprehensive 24-hour shelter for women and families in the Saint Louis bi-state region. A full range of ancillary activities are also sponsored in include life skills classes, individualized case management, emergency assistance, transitional and permanent housing placement, and long-term follow-up.

Over the course of the agency's history, other social service organizations have merged with Gateway to include: Aunts & Uncles, Christian Ministries, and Someone Cares Mission.
