Facilities

Gateway Homeless Services is located just north of downtown St. Louis in the City's 5th Ward. In the historic Carr Square neighborhood, our building is just three blocks from City Museum and a block from the Gateway Classic Headquarters.

Surrounded by new housing development, burgeoning businesses, and a growing neighborhood with old and new amenities, Gateway is in an exciting part of the City. From the 3rd floor terrace of our building, one can see the Edward Jones Dome and downtown St. Louis to the east, the renovated Franklin School Building to the south, a large business development to the west, and the Old St. Louis Neighborhood and St. Stanislaus Kostka Roman Catholic Church to the north.

Gateway's building is the historic Polish Community Center that was used to address the needs of Polish immigrants in the early part of the 20th century. The top two floors of the building housed Polish immigrants as they arrived in St. Louis. The second floor was dedicated to office and classroom space and the first to a gymnasium and cafeteria.

The building's current usage is not very different from its original use although now, the 1st through 4th floors are used for emergency shelter. The first floor gymnasium has been converted to a dormitory and the third floor has shelter space in addition to classrooms and offices. The basement of the building has laundry and storage facilities and additional space for resident needs and services.

A large classroom is located on the third floor, and has been recently renovated thanks to the support of Saint Louis' Cardinals Care. In other space on the third floor, The Saint Louis Science Center offers its Learning Places program to the youth residing in our shelter. This program teaches science and mathematics through experiential learning processes.

A new warehouse facility was recently opened at 3965 Park Avenue just west of Cardinal Glennon Chidren's Hospital. This space will be used for the organization's food pantry and storage of in-kind donations from the Back to School program, Kids Caring 4 Kids, and support from individuals and organizations.

The Carr Square Neighborhood

Gateway Homeless Services is proud to be a community partner in the Carr Square Neighborhood. Carr Square includes multi-family housing and institutional uses. Carr Square is a key neighborhood in the 5th Ward providing excellent transition from the dense downtown development to the single family housing to the north.

Much of the redevelopment that has taken place is due to the Housing Replacement Project that the St. Louis Housing Authority has commissioned McCormack Baron to implement, called Murphy Park Phases 1, 2 and 3. These new multi-family homes that surround the Gateway building to the north and east are the nucleus for redevelopment in the form of new town home clusters. These new homes provide a seamless blend of market rate, assisted and public funded housing alternatives. The clusters of town homes provide safe enclaves for parking and improved streetscapes.

There are approximately sixteen acres of land available for future development, five of which front N. 14th Street with the old Carr School. This area is suggested to be office/incubator business development. The remaining eleven acres are targeted for multi-family development in concert with surrounding housing patterns.

Facilities Improvement

Gateway Homeless Services is housed in the old Polish Community Center, a building that is over 90 years old.  All emergency shelter work is done at the 1000 North 19th Street facility (63106).

Recently, the organization opened a warehouse facility at 3965 Park just west of Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital.  All nonperishable food items and inkind donations are stored there.

Capital improvements are currently needed for the 1000 North 19th Street facility including:

  • Emergency Alarm System with Directional Lighting
  • New roof and guttering
  • Renovation of all bathrooms in the facility
  • Removal of asbestos and an old boiler from the "underbasement"
  • Renovation of the old food pantry space for client services
  • Energy audit and zone heating

3965 Park - Warehouse improvements:

  • Used or new room-sized refrigerator for perishable items
  • Shelving and storage units for storage of inkind donations

All facility improvements are undertaken with a view toward improving the safety and performance of the organization.
