Community Partnerships!

Overview of Community Partnerships at Gateway Homeless Services

Who

Gateway Homeless Services is the largest 24-hour emergency shelter for women and children in the state of Missouri.  We provide safe, nurturing emergency shelter services to 110 clients each day. On average, 60% of the people we serve are children under the age of 11. Our mission is to empower women to move their families from homelessness to transitional or permanent housing as quickly as possible.

Our Children

84% of homeless persons placed into transitional housing will never become homeless again. This statistic means everything to the future of St. Louis children facing the unimaginable burden of homelessness. While homeless children are faced with a constant barrage of challenges including being sick at four times the normal rate, going hungry twice as often, having a greater likelihood of experiencing violence and great challenges in school.

We Need You

Ending homelessness is truly a community effort. Since its inception, Gateway Homeless Services has relied heavily on government support to accomplish its critical work. Over the past two years, we’ve seen a 30% decline in government support and this trend is expected to continue. At the same time, the need for services like ours is on the rise. Therefore, it is critical that we work hard to engage corporate and community groups in the work of ending homelessness for women and children in our setting.

How You Can Help

At Gateway Homeless Services we are excited to start 2010 by launching our Community Partnership initiative. We seek to build meaningful, long-term relationships with corporate, community, education and faith based groups. The foundation of our program is the Adopt A Room opportunity. Partnering with Gateway Homeless Services in this way eases the burden of homelessness for women and children in our setting by providing a “soft place to fall” at the end of the long, challenging days our clients often face while homeless.

How it Works

While Adopt a Room can be customized to meet the needs and desires of the partnership group, the program is clearly defined and well structured.  The program can include interaction with Gateway’s clients (women and/ or children) or can be completed independent of direct client interaction.

As an Adopt a Room Community Partnership, groups will be responsible for the following areas:

• One major overhaul or make over of the room: paint, bedding, furnishings etc.

• Create (non religious inspirational messaging in each room) *optional

• Collect (or purchase) new or gently used sheets, comforters and linens for each room

• Check in on each room a minimum of four times per year: assist in cleaning room (if necessary) collect additional sheets, towels, comforters and linens, change inspirational messages, if desired work with the children/ women in to create art projects for the room

• All projects/ products done or brought into the shelter must be funded solely by the group adopting the room. (Fundraisers, in-kind donation collections, purchases should all be made independent of Gateway Homeless Services staff)

• Each adopted room will include a photo (of your group working in the room) plaque and message to the clients residing in each room. The photo plaque will feature the name (or logo) of the company/ organization the group represents (prepared by Gateway Homeless Services staff). *optional

Funding Your Partnership

Adopt a Room can be accomplished with a small budget, especially if the group is focused on collecting donations of gently used items. In most cases, the largest expense would be related to paint and supplies. This project can be as basic or in-depth as a group desires as long as it meets the goals listed in this document.

Volunteering At Gateway

"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."  --Mahatma Gandhi

Providing leadership through volunteer service at Gateway is a wonderful way to support Gateway's important mission to provide safe, nurturing emergency shelter services that empower homeless people to move into transitional housing!

The opportunity to serve others and to be the recipient of service and education in return makes us all partners at Gateway.  Clients, staff, volunteers work together to move people into transitional and permanent housing.  Each person has a role, and each person can help to support folks in their role.  Our outcome can be jointly achieved, and that outcome is for each person and family in our shelter to move into a home.

If you are seeking to be a volunteer at Gateway, you will need to watch, listen, learn, and grow in your understanding of homelessness and your personal role in ending it.

Here is a slideshow about Gateway's mission:    Gateway Slideshow

Volunteer service at Gateway is geared to our primary mission to empower homeless women and children to move into transitional and permanent housing.  Since our staff is extremely busy, all volunteer relationships are developed through our Resource Development Director, Jenn Gauthier-Lyke.  Please email her at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Home(less) for the Holidays

hfth_banner_600.jpg

On November 22, 2008, Michael Stokes and Michael McMillan, St. Louis City License Collector, chaired our new and unique event entitled Home(less) for the Holidays.  The Gala, held at the Riverfront Hyatt recognized many s/heros in the ongoing work of ending homelessness in our community.  In addition, many of Gateway's residents were able to enjoy the evening.

Our chairs deserve a great deal of credit for the success of the event and we also say a big thank you to all of our supporters, donors, and volunteers.  Donna Jones of A Cinderella Affair did a fantastic job of pulling the event together as did India Gray and may others!  Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

The gala serves as the kickoff for our Kids Caring 4 Kids campaign, a collaborative project with KMOV.

In 2009, we expect an even larger and more festive event.   We will be announcing chairs, venue and date soon!    Be sure to join us and be a part of one of the most inclusive events in our community as we celebrate St. Louis' success in combating homelessness with the families and children who are daily facing the challenges of homelessness.

Kids Caring 4 Kids

In collaboration with KMOV and other community organizations, Gateway Homeless Services will sponsor the Kids Caring 4 Kids Campaign. During the Holiday Season, Gateway will have over 150 barrells distributed across the community to collect toys, food, and holiday gifts to be shared with shelters and food pantries in the region.

Gateway Homeless Services staff and volunteers will do pick-ups throughout the holiday season, store items in the Gateway warehouse at 3965 Park Avenue, and work with other organizations to distribute these holiday gifts to those in need.

Gateway extends its thanks to KMOV for their sponsorship and development of this campaign and we look forward to a partnership with many throughout our community as we seek to make this holiday season a special one for those in need.

In November of each year, the Kids Caring 4 Kids Campaign officially kick-offs with the Home(less) for the Holidays event.
